POWER TOOLS, PARENTING AND THE NEW 'MALE MISTIQUE' ARE THE COMIC BUILDING
BLOCKS FOR "HOME IMPROVEMENT," PREMIERING ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 8:30 PM
(ET/PT) ON ABC-TV
Stand-up comic Tim Allen, fresh from his smash Showtime comedy special, "Men
Are Pigs," brings his unique philosophy on masculinity and the virtues of power
tools to the half-hour family comedy series "Home Improvement," premiering
Tuesday, September 17, 8:30 PM (ET/PT) on ABC-TV.
Written and executive-produced by Matt Williams (creator of "Roseanne" and
"Carol & Company"), David McFadzean ("Roseanne," "Carol & Company"), and
Carmen Finestra ("The Cosby Show"), "Home Improvement" is a heartfelt
and funny examination of the questions today's men have about life: What does it
mean to be "a man"? How do you become a good husband and father? And why does
your wife make you wash the dishes before they go in the dishwasher?
Co-starring with Tim Allen in "Home Improvement" are Patricia Richardson ("FM")
as his quick-witted wife, Jill; Earl Hindman ("The Equalizer") as his
eccentric, mentor-like neighbor, Wilson; and Zachery Ty Bryan ("Crash: The
Mystery of Flight 1501"), Jonathan Taylor Thomas ("The Bradys") and newcomer
Taran Smith, as Tim's three sons.
Tim Taylor (Tim Allen) is the host of "Tool Time," a cable home improvement
show on which Taylor reigns over a macho celebration of power tools and obscure
hardware, dispensing household repair tips and advice on "recapturing the male
spirit" in equal measure. But for all his swagger and manly confidence on the
show, Tim doesn't always set the best example at home. He wants to be a good
husband and a good father, but his insatiable urge to rewire everything and give
it 'more power' often puts him at odds with his wife, Jill (Patricia Richardson).
And though he tries his best to teach his three young sons (Zachery Ty Bryan,
Taran Smith and Jonathan Taylor Thomas) how to be men, he
often has more questions about what that means than they do.
That's when he turns to Wilson (Earl Hindman), his eccentric next-door neigbor,
for advice. Wilson, who is only seen at eye-level over the backyard fence,
gives Tim sage advice on everything from male-female communication to primitive
initiation rites. He helps Tim sort out his feelings and discover that, deep
inside, he really is a good man.
